George Rekers Redux: The Sissy Boy Experiment

“Safety and security don’t just happen; they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear.” ~President Nelson Mandela

The radio silence around here has been due to exciting projects on other platforms, at least some of which I hope to be able to share with you soon. In the meantime, I wanted to inform you all that Jim Burroway over at The Box Turtle Bulletin conducted a brilliant investigation, “What Are Little Boys Made Of?,” about Kirk A. Murphy: a gay man who was victimized as a child by Dr. George Alan Rekers, Dr. Richard Green and the travesty of “therapy” to reverse sexual orientation. Some of you may recall George Rekers from a sex scandal that broke just over a year ago, possibly even from a column I wrote in the scandal’s aftermath which detailed Dr. Rekers’ connections to current “ex-gay” therapies. As fate would have it, Mr. Murphy’s family only recently discovered that one of George Rekers’ primary case studies, that of “Kraig” (later “Craig”) was their son and brother. The dissertation that Dr. Rekers wrote that earned him a PhD in psychology was largely based on this data. Additionally, Dr. Green used Kirk Murphy in his book The “Sissy Boy Syndrome” and the Development of Homosexuality, changing his name to “Kyle.” Both men (Dr. Green holds an M.D.; Dr. Rekers does not) lauded “Kraig”/”Kyle” as one of the greatest achievements of their school of thought (though there was never any disclosure that George Rekers’  “Kraig” and Richard Green’s “Kyle” were the same person), and used the data from his case as proof that sexual orientation can be changed, and that “ex-gays” exist.

This “treatment,” which involved mental, physical and emotional abuse and trauma, occurred over the course of several years during the 1970s. The caveat that they continually failed to acknowledge is that Kirk Murphy attempted suicide at the age of 17, came out as a gay man in 1985 at the age of 20, and committed suicide in 2003 at the age of 38.

Mr. Murphy’s mother, Kaytee, his older brother Mark and younger sister Maris cooperated for months with both Mr. Burroway and the “Anderson Cooper 360” team at CNN to tell this story. As this blog has dealt with George Rekers before, and LGBT rights is one of my major focal points, I felt it was necessary and proper to lead my readers to this follow-up. I encourage you to refresh your memories by reading my column from last year, and then to read The Box Turtle Bulletin investigation as well as watch the brilliant AC360 piece that aired last week on this topic, “The Sissy Boy Experiment” (obviously named after Dr. Richard Green’s ridiculous book). I have embedded all three parts below, for your convenience.

You can share your thoughts with Kirk Murphy’s sister, photographer Maris Murphy Ehlers, on Twitter @mepinmin. She is a kind, courageous, and talented human being, and this has been a very painful process for her, so I ask you please to treat her with the utmost respect. You can send feedback on “The Sissy Boy Experiment” to the 360 team on Twitter @AC360 and directly to Anderson Cooper @andersoncooper. Again, please be polite. Jim Burroway’s Twitter account appears to be mostly an automated feed, but you can reach him at Editor@boxturtlebulletin.com.

As always, you can follow me on Twitter @TheGrottoTweets.
